Manchester United are yet to enquire about the availability of Memphis Depay
According to the Spanish publication, Sport, Manchester United are yet to enquire about the availability of Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay this summer. It has been claimed that the Red Devils would be looking at the Dutch striker as the ideal player to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, the Red side of Manchester haven’t made an approach yet as they are busy dealing with the transfer of another Barcelona player, Frenkie de Jong. It has been known that the Spanish giants aren’t aware of the club’s interests and there have been no discussions about the 28-year-old while dealing with the De Jong transfer.
The former Lyon striker would himself assess his options before making a decision. It has been claimed that the Netherlands international has rejected a move to Antonio Conte-led Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs didn’t make any official bid but had permission to speak with the player’s agent regarding a move.
But, now as the race looks open, Manchester United would have the opportunity to face zero competition if they pursue their former attacker. Memphis Depay dawned the Red shirt for two years but he was unable to extract anything valuable from the entire spell.
The 28-year-old then moved to French giants, Lyon, where he made a big name for himself by racking up goals for fun. He scored 76 goals and provided a further 55 assists in just 176 appearances. His explosive performances earned him a move to Camp Nou but things haven’t been the same for him.
Xavi has hesitated in giving him regular minutes and that would spark a move to Old Trafford if the club makes an offer. Manchester United have already let Edinson Cavani depart and would lose Cristiano Ronaldo if the legendary striker prefers to force a transfer.
In any case, the club would need to sign a striker and Depay would be a chapter option in the currently inflated transfer market. Barcelona would be willing to part ways with the Dutchman for a fee in the region of £20m.
