Transfer News: Chelsea set to make a bid for Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong
According to Relevo (h/t Mirror), Manchester United have received a huge blow in their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong with Chelsea set to make a bid for the Dutch superstar.
This Frenkie de Jong saga has been dragging on for too long for anyone’s comfort with Man United going nowhere with their pursuit for the player. It was being claimed that they reached an agreement with the club, but Frenkie doesn’t want to come.
It has been evident that Frenkie de Jong is Manchester United’s priority this summer and Erik ten Hag seems to be very keen to reunite with a player he worked magic with during their time at Amsterdam.
However, with the player not wanting to leave Barcelona for Man United, Chelsea are looking to use this window of opportunity. The Blues are set to lodge their first bid for the talented superstar and hijack him from Man United.
Frenkie de Jong at full flow is one of the best midfielders in the world and can be exceptional for any team that he plays for. He can influence a match single-handedly and be a thorn in the opposition’s plans on a consistent basis.
The 25-year-old joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 in a move that was received with much fanfare. He has been very solid for the Spanish club but often leaves a lot to be desired due to the immense potential he possesses.
Chelsea might hold a slight advantage over Man United in the pursuit of Frenkie de Jong due to their ability to offer the Dutchman Champions League football, something the Red Devils cannot promise to the player.
A player of Frenkie’s ability would naturally want to compete in the most elite of competitions and a season of Europa League football is something of a downer in that regard. Hence, it could be difficult for Man United.
