According to the Mirror, Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag halted Manchester United’s pursuit of Pau Torres from Villarreal in order to sign Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez this summer.
Manchester United wrapped up the signing of the talented Ajax centre-back this summer but it has emerged that the Red Devils initially wanted to sign Pau Torres from Villarreal before ten Hag intervened.
The new Man United manager was keen on signing the Argentinian defender, a player he has worked with during their time at Ajax and he wanted the Red Devils to prioritise the signing of the 24-year-old over the Spaniard.
Pau Torres has the reputation of being one of La Liga’s best defenders for the past few seasons and he would have been a great signing for Man United. However, the Argentinian could also be a great option for the Red Devils.
Martinez has been one of Ajax’s best players in recent years. He joined the club from Defensa in 2019 and has gone on to become one of the best young centre-backs in the world. He even got voted as ‘Ajax player of the year’.
The Red Devils were seemingly eager to sign a centre-back this summer and Lisandro Martinez is looking like the perfect fit. Having already used him at Ajax, ten Hag will know how to bring the best out of the Argentinian.
The centre of defence is an area of concern for Man United this summer with Raphael Varane being the only world-class defender. Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire have failed to convince, largely due to their inconsistent performances.
