Transfer News: Manchester United shortlist midfield duo as Frenkie de Jong alternative
According to Radio station talkSPORT (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United have shortlisted Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves as alternatives if they fail to sign Dutch superstar Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.
That Man United are interested in signing Frenkie de Jong is one of the worst-kept secrets and it has been going on for quite some time now. Despite both parties in agreement to make this deal happen, the player does not want to come here.
Frenkie wants to stay at Barcelona and continue there despite the enticing prospect of reuniting with his former boss Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford and being the face to lead the new project undergoing at Man United.
The Red Devils know that this saga has been dragging on for too long and are drawing up alternatives to the Barcelona man who they can pursue if a deal for the Dutch midfielder fails to go through eventually.
Two players on the short-list include Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves. Both players are exceptional talents in their own rights and signing either one would be an exceptional acquisition for Manchester United.
However, all three players in question bring very different skill sets to the table. Frenkie is probably the one with the highest ceiling amongst the three but the other two players are tremendous and could be a game-changing signing.
One thing the duo have that Frenkie doesn’t is the wealth of Premier League experience behind them. As we all know, it is not easy adapting to the English league and this could be a key factor for the duo in question.
As of now, Frenkie will still continue to be the first choice for Man United this season but a move for the Barcelona man is looking increasingly difficult to pull off with every passing day, The best thing for us is to line up alternatives.
