Transfer News: Leeds United are interested in signing former Manchester United star Juan Mata
According to Spanish outlet AS (h/t Manchester Evening News), Leeds United are interested in signing out-of-contract veteran Juan Mata, who was released by Manchester United last month.
Juan Mata is out-of-contract with Manchester United this summer and he is expected to leave Old Trafford. The Spanish attacking midfielder is set to look for a fresh start as he looks to wind down his playing career.
An extremely talented player once upon a time, Mata’s career has stalled in recent years as he got fewer chances with age. He still has the ability to succeed at a mid-level club still and be of use to them for a few more years.
The 34-year-old joined Man United from Chelsea in 2014 and has gone on to spend eight years with the Red Devils. Reduced to a bit-part role towards the end of his time here, it is easy to forget what he is capable of.
This season, Mata found opportunities to come by really hard and played very few games this season. The Spanish playmaker played 12 games across all competitions, failing to score or assist any goals during this time.
With him leaving the club for sure this summer, Leeds United have entered the race to sign the talented Spaniard. Mata will be helpful for the Yorkshire club and his experience will be very useful to Jesse March’s side.
Man United will not lose much by the exit of Juan Mata. He wasn’t one of our crucial players last season and we have enough alternatives to replace him come next season including Bruno Fernandes.
It could be a sour point that Mata will be joining our eternal rivals Leeds United but this is not a high-profile exit and hence it shouldn’t be much of a sore point. Hence, it is good for Mata if this move does go through.
