Bayern Munich make transfer bid for Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt amidst Manchester United interest
According to the Italian source Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football.London), Bayern Munich have placed a bid on the table for Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt amidst interest from Manchester United for a potential transfer. He is being subjected to a tussle between some of the major European clubs at this moment.
Man United are in the market for defensive additions, and they have identified de Ligt as a potential option. They are keeping tabs on his situation right now but have received a blow by this latest piece of information. That is because Bayern Munchen have made a £76million offer to Juve for his services.
This proposal from Bayern is quite problematic for the Red Devils as making such a large investment is too big of a risk in the English side’s current delicate situation. Hence, the latter may potentially decide to end their interest in the Dutchman if they believe that better options are available as of now.
Not feasible for Man Utd!
There is no doubt that the 22-year-old remains to be one of the best in the business, but he is yet to reach his full potential either. Signing de Ligt would have been a great prospect indeed, especially considering how the Mancunians could have reunited him with his former manager Erik ten Hag.
Both the Dutch compatriots worked together to a great extent during their time together at Ajax which could have been replicated at Old Trafford as well. But that should not happen under the current circumstances, especially after the proposal made by the Bavarians.
With Chelsea also being interested in de Ligt, there is a chance that a bidding war could take place if they are desperate to sign the centre-back. Hence, it would be wise to look elsewhere to solve the defensive issues that saw us concede a whopping 57 goals in the previous Premier League season.
That would be the best decision considering how we have other targets like Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez and Pau Torres of Villarreal on the shortlist. Martinez, for example, is rated at around £60million, which is still a better value for money than de Ligt in this situation.

The central defensive role is not the only area where we need additions, so making such a large investment in one position would not be good for us looking at the past mistakes. The likes of right-back and right-wing could use new signings, which means that it would be best for us to stay away from de Ligt for the time being.
