Transfer News: Manchester United made contact with the camp of Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt

According to journalist Christian Falk of Sport Bild on Twitter, Manchester United have contacted the camp of Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt to discuss the possibility of a move in this summer transfer window. He is currently being subjected to interest from some of the top European clubs, which has seen him get linked with a departure ahead of the next season.

Man United have now expressed their interest in signing de Ligt to improve their defensive options for the upcoming campaign. They have inquired with his entourage over a potential transfer but have been rebuffed, as the defender has set his mind on a move to Bayern Munich.

The Dutch international is currently lying in wait to see if Bayern Munchen and Juve can find an agreement in terms of the transfer fees. Falk has even claimed in another tweet that de Ligt and his agent Rafaela Pimenta will convey their desire to move to Allianz Arena to his current club this weekend.

Just paper talk?

It is stated that the 22-year-old is rated in the region of £76.5million at this moment which certainly pours cold water over this update. After all, we cannot spend such a large sum when our budget is only believed to be around £100million, which is quite low indeed given the revamp the squad needs.

We have already spent £12million from that allotted funds, with Tyrell Malacia joining us from Feyenoord earlier this week. Spending such a big sum on de Ligt is not wise when we have other targets like Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and Lisandro Martinez of Ajax Amsterdam to pursue, isn’t wise.

With Chelsea also being touted as a potential destination, it would be in our best interest if we look elsewhere, with Martinez being an option. Hence, one could argue that this piece of news holds no weight after accounting for the right context of our current circumstances.

There is no doubt that de Ligt would have greatly helped us, considering how even our starters failed to do their best last season. The likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane have underperformed during that period, which could have made the former Ajax man a suitable target.

That being said, it would not make sense for us to risk our transfer business for this summer by spending such a fee on one single player. Making superstar signings without thinking about the team’s best interests is one of the reasons that has caused our downfall. As such, it is high time that we change our policies to focus on making smart transfers in our current delicate situation.
