Chelsea plot a cash plus swap deal with Barcelona for Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong
According to the Spanish news outlet Relevo on Twitter (h/t Daily Star), Chelsea are planning to facilitate a cash plus swap deal with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong, who is a target for Manchester United. This news would undoubtedly be a blow for those in Manchester as they are at risk of being hijacked in their pursuit to sign the midfielder.
It is thought that Man United have reached an agreement in principle with Barca for de Jong for a guaranteed fee of £56million. However, there are still some matters to sort out when it comes to the bonuses involved in this deal, as Erik ten Hag is keen to reunite with his former player.
However, the Blues have now registered their interest in de Jong, and they are also willing to offer Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso alongside an amount to complete a move for the holding midfielder. The Catalans are targeting both the Chelsea defenders as of now, which has paved the way for a potential exchange deal.
Cause for concern?
There could potentially be some weight to this latest piece of information as the West London side’s owner Todd Boehly recently met with Xavi Hernandez’s side for some transfer business. As such, it would be best if the Red Devils consider Chelsea as a real threat at this moment.
After all, Jorginho and N’Golo Kante are in the twilight of their playing careers and have just one year left in their respective contracts. Both of them have struggled with their form, especially towards the tail end of the previous campaign, with Kante suffering from severe injury woes.
Furthermore, Thomas Tuchel is claimed to have been devastated when he lost out on de Jong to the La Liga giants when he was the manager of Paris Saint-Germain. Under these circumstances, it would be best if we finalise a move for the Dutch midfielder as soon as possible.
After all, ten Hag views de Jong as the main cog of the plans he has for the midfield in the project he is building at Old Trafford. Losing out on someone like the Barca ace would be a hefty blow indeed, looking at the time we spent chasing after him.

Hence, it would be wise on our part to ramp up the efforts in our pursuit to sign de Jong. We are also in a disagreement with the Spanish club when it comes to paying a part of the £17million in wages that Barca currently owe to the 25-year-old after he deferred them during the pandemic.
We may be forced to give in to their demands if Tuchel’s team does actively target the Blaugrana superstar this summer. The supporters have grown frustrated with this saga so let’s hope that the Mancunians wrap this up soon to prevent further risks moving forward.
