According to Gerard Romero via Twitter (h/t Manchester Evening News), Barcelona have increased their demands for Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong.
The Red Devils’ pursuit of Frenkie de Jong seems to be progressing at a startling pace but it seems like the interest has cooled down in recent weeks. With no new news in the past few days, it’s not evident what was happening to the deal.
Popular journalist Gerard Romero has now claimed that Barcelona, who are now in a more comfortable position financially than they were a few weeks ago, are now holding out for big money for the Dutch superstar.
Manchester United made a proposal for the talented Dutchman a few days ago offering Barcelona €65m plus €22m variables to sign de Jong. However, it does look like the Spanish giants are not happy with the offer.
Barcelona are now demanding a fee of €75m fixed fee and €12m as potential bonus payments if they are to sell the talented Dutchman this summer and the ball is now in Man United’s court to make a decision.
The 25-year-old midfielder has the potential to be one of the best midfielders in the world and on his day, he could be absolutely unplayable. However, inconsistency has meant that de Jong has not reached the heights that we know he can.
De Jong played some of his best football under Erik ten Hag during their time at Amsterdam. The Dutch tactician knew how to get the best out of a player who is good at too many things for his own good.
It is widely expected that a move to Man United where he can reunite with ten Hag might just be what de Jong needs to become the player he can be. If the Dutchman shows his top-level at Old Trafford, very few people can bet against him being one of the best players in the Premier League.
Man United’s existing midfield is mediocre to say the best. We still don’t know what formation ten Hag is going to play but Donny van de Beek is arguably the only midfielder we have who possesses tremendous quality as of now.

Hence, Manchester United and Frenkie de Jong could turn out to be a match made in heaven. It remains to be seen if the Red Devils are willing to pay the big bucks for the Dutchman.
