Transfer News: Agent Jorge Mendes offers Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to Barcelona
According to Spanish outlet AS (h/t Daily Mail), The agent of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jorge Mendes and the President of Barcelona, Joan Laporta, discussed the possibility of transferring the Portuguese to Camp Nou from Manchester United.
Last year, the 37-year-old was welcomed back to Old Trafford by the Red Devils for a second stint. He had a productive season on an individual level with 24 goals from 38 games across all competitions. Even though Ronaldo scored 18 goals in the Premier League, the 20-time English champions could only finish sixth and earn a spot in the Europa League.
Ronaldo is believed to have informed Man United that he wants to depart in the current transfer window despite the signing of Erik ten Hag out of concern that he will not be able to achieve his goals of winning silverware at Old Trafford.
As shocking as it may sound, Barcelona have been given the chance to sign the Portugal international Despite his affiliation with archrivals Real Madrid. Mendes was believed to have met with Joan Laporta, president of Barcelona, and the two discussed Ronaldo’s transfer to Camp Nou as well as other players.
Despite Ronaldo’s unclear future in 2021, Barcelona president Laporta apparently intended to sign him to the team, but a deal fell through due to Barcelona’s persistent financial issues.
What next for CR7?
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has another year left on his contract and an option to extend it through the conclusion of the 2023–24 season. Manchester United have made it clear that they do not intend to let him leave this summer.
Due to personal obligations, Ronaldo was unable to report to Man United for preseason practice on Monday. It seems the Portuguese star is due for a one-on-one chat with new manager Eric Ten Hag after his return.
Before leaving for Juventus in 2018, Ronaldo played for Real Madrid for nine years, winning four Champions Leagues and tallying 450 goals in 438 matches. Therefore, after establishing a lasting legacy with Real Madrid, it is difficult to envision how the 37-year-old would fit in the Blaugrana shirt.
Ronaldo’s current frustration with his circumstances at Old Trafford would not come as a surprise. In spite of having a good season personally, the team endured a really difficult period for the rest of the previous season.
Even though Erik ten Hag has now joined the team and a team renovation is anticipated, we have yet to make a single signing official. Someone like Ronaldo would find that upsetting since he might sense a lack of support, especially in light of recent outgoings that further diminished the team’s calibre.

Given that Edinson Cavani left for free this summer, losing Ronaldo would be a serious problem because we don’t have any other natural strikers in our lineup. The board and ten Hag must therefore reassure the superstar over the new project and their future objectives.
