Fabrizio Romano: Erik ten Hag wants Manchester United to focus on Lisandro Martinez after Christian Eriksen deal
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Erik ten Hag wants Manchester United to focus on signing Lisandro Martinez after agreeing to a deal with Christian Eriksen. Securing this deal would mean that the centre-back would be their third signing of this summer transfer window.
Man United have already completed a move for Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord and have now agreed to terms with Eriksen. Ten Hag has no plans to stop there as he wants the club to quickly move on to their next target, which is Ajax star Martinez who is also targeted by Arsenal.
Ten Hag is eager to reunite with Martinez this summer with the Gunners also trying to steal a march on their direct rivals. The Argentine defender has made up his mind to leave Amsterdam in this transfer window and firmly conveyed that matter to his current club.
Can Man Utd beat Arsenal?
The Red Devils cannot afford to let our defensive woes slide, looking at the struggles they underwent in the previous season. Our starters like Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof were not at their best during that period, which in and of itself is concerning as well.
Even Raphael Varane has failed to hit his peak form as he did for Real Madrid. Other options like Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe are in line to be sold as the Manchester side is open to parting ways with the defensive trio ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Considering how we conceded a massive 57 goals in the 2021-22 Premier League season, the centre-back role is one such position that must be bolstered at all costs. Martinez would be a great solution to our issues, plus his flexibility to play as a defensive midfielder is a bonus indeed.
It is good to see that ten Hag is pressuring the management to get his targets as early as possible. That is quite important considering how the pre-season is nearing by the minute. Integrating the new signings into the squad is just as important so let’s hope to see the Mancunians succeed in this pursuit.
With Mikel Arteta’s side being an obstacle in our pathway, securing Martinez’s services would not be easy at all. After all, the 24-year-old would be provided with an option to join a project that is already looking to be solid at this moment.

Then again, perhaps the prospect of playing with ten Hag and being a part of the rebuild at Old Trafford could be an attractive proposition as well. Moreover, playing under someone whom Martinez knows could turn the tide in our favour, with stability being important ahead of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
That is, of course, a theory Man United fans hope turns out to be true. We can’t rest easy until Martinez’s future is decided for certain with Arsenal hot on our heels.
