Manchester United on alert as Matthijs de Ligt wants to leave Juventus this summer
According to the Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (h/t Daily Mail), Manchester United have been put on red alert as Matthijs de Ligt is now keen to leave Juventus in this summer transfer window. He has taken this stance following a heated exchange with club officials during the latest contract talks.
De Ligt is currently contracted in Turin for two more years, but Juve wanted to extend his deal until 2026. However, the latest talks have not gone according to plan as both parties have disagreed over the value of the new release clause and the revised salary package.
Juve want the release clause to stand at £98million, while the Dutch international believe that their demands are too high and the value should be around £68million. That has caused a break in their relationship as de Ligt has made up his mind not to return to contract negotiations.
Huge opportunity for Man Utd?
The prospect of reuniting the 22-year-old with Erik ten Hag is exciting to think about, looking at the success they brought in at Ajax all those years ago. The potential reunion is made even more attractive looking at how de Ligt would also join forces with his former teammate Donny van de Beek.
In fact, we are also chasing Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, while players like Antony, Lisandro Martinez, Edson Alvarez and Jurrien Timber have also been linked with a move. Bringing them together could be a great piece of business as it would create healthy chemistry within the squad due to their history with ten Hag.
Now with de Ligt becoming disillusioned with life in Italy, we are handed more covers in terms of our centre-back options for this summer. The defence is one of the areas that we must bolster as starters like Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have not done well for us in the previous campaign.
That being said, we must be wary of Chelsea in this situation as they could pose trouble for us should we actively pursue de Ligt ahead of the next season. Supposedly, both English sides are stated to be in the “pole position” to secure his services right now.

Since the Serie A superstar has already made his wishes to be sold clear to the Bianconeri, we must discuss the matter internally with ten Hag and see whether de Ligt would fall into his plans moving forward.
The Dutch central defender may just be costly due to the £67million investment Massimiliano Allegri’s side made for him back in 2019, but since de Ligt is still in the early stages of his playing career, he could repay the expense that we would incur should if a move is completed this summer.
