Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder sends message to Jurrien Timber amidst Manchester United transfer links
Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder has sent a message to Jurrien Timber regarding his future amid links to Manchester United for a potential transfer. The youngster has been touted to be in line to reunite with his former manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag had identified Timber as one of his top targets for this summer, and a deal was seemingly close to being reached at one point. However, the sentiment changed in recent weeks as the centre-back had concerns about changing clubs ahead of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Speaking in an interview with ESPN Netherlands on their YouTube channel via AFC Ajax on Twitter (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Schreuder has expressed his belief that the Dutch international would be staying in Amsterdam beyond this summer. That would deal more blow to Man United and their hopes of signing Timber.
“Timber is very smart. He knows what is best for himself. We think he is not done at Ajax yet. I have spoken with him and I am assuming he is staying at Ajax.”
Timber, lost cause for Man Utd?
We must do our best to convince Timber that he can become a regular under ten Hag in Manchester. In fact, that could become a real possibility considering how the likes of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have underperformed in the previous campaign.
In fact, even Raphael Varane was not up to the mark at times for us during that period which would give Timber more chances to earn a starting role with us. We should look to use that to our advantage and turn things around and increase our chances of completing a move.
That being said, Schreuder’s latest words would be concerning looking at how he has made that suggestion after meeting with Timber. However, we cannot admit defeat just yet as Timber would have the right surroundings to become a regular for us.
Then again, it would be best if we have some alternative targets to cope with a worst-case scenario. Fortunately, the Red Devils have other options on their shortlist as well, which would give us enough leeway to bolster the ranks this summer.
