Transfer News: Manchester United open talks for Matthijs de Ligt

According to Calciomercato (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United have opened talks with Juventus to sign highly-rated Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.

A product of Ajax’s famed youth academy, de Ligt joined Juventus from Ajax in 2019 and has since then gone on to have a very mixed time at the club. Initially struggling to adapt to the Serie A, the player has slowly come into his own now at Turin and is one of the mainstays in the team.

This season has been no different with the Dutch centre-back displacing Juve legend Giorgio Chiellini from the starting lineup and becoming Juve’s first-choice defender. The 22-year-old has played 42 times for the Serie A giants this season scoring three goals and providing one assist.

With two years left on his current deal with the Italian club, Manchester United have approached Juventus to open talks on signing the talented player.

Bringing the band back?

Manchester United have signed Erik ten Hag as their new manager next season and it looks like the Dutch tactician wants to bring the band back from their famous Champions League semi-finals run in 2018.

Donny van de Beek is already in the squad and it is no secret that Man United are trying to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona. Now, the Red Devils have opened talks to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus.

Add to this, the newer Ajax crop that ten Hag worked with like Antony, Jurrien Timber and Lisandro Martinez who have all been linked with a move to Man United this summer and it seems like the Dutch tactician is out here trying to build a mini Ajax team at Old Trafford.

Regardless, if Manchester United are to sign de Ligt, it will be a great addition to our weak backline. He could partner Raphael Varane to deadly effect next season. The presence of Donny van de Beek and possibly Frenkie de Jong should we sign him, the Juve man will not find it difficult to adjust to a new league after all.

Signing de Ligt makes a lot of sense and when you consider that he will be reuniting with former boss ten Hag, it makes even more sense. However, the transfer will not come cheap for United and they will have to be willing to dish out the money.
