Manchester United are set to make an improved transfer bid for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are set to make an improved bid to facilitate a transfer for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong shortly. He continues to be their primary target for this summer as they are “negotiating hard” to finalise a move for him at the earliest.

Man United saw their opening offer worth £51.64million, including bonuses, get rejected by Barca. De Jong still has four years left in his current contract, which has led to €100million being touted for his services. Despite that, there is a belief that the Catalans would be willing to sell him for £64.55million in a guaranteed amount alongside add-ons.

Erik ten Hag is eager to reunite with de Jong, having made the midfielder his priority target for this summer. The Red Devils are looking to strike a deal that would not compromise their ability to bolster other areas, but they are ready to end their pursuit if they fail to reach that outcome.

Can Man Utd succeed in their pursuit?

The supporters have grown frustrated about this matter as the Manchester side have spent their time chasing after de Jong. The club are yet to make any movements in this transfer window while their direct competitors have already made reinforcements to their ranks this summer.

In fact, the timing of this due proposal from the Mancunians have raised further doubt in the fans’ minds. After all, the Glazers are set to take £11million from the club’s dividends tomorrow. That has led to suggestions within the fanbase that the new bid could be to control the negative reactions rather than for the move.

The supporters would hope that is not the case, so it remains to be seen how much of an effort ten Hag’s side would take when placing the offer on the table. Fortunately, it is good to know that we have alternative targets who are cheaper on the shortlist if de Jong remains financially out of reach moving forward.

If that is the case, then the management must set a deadline so that they would not lose out on their other targets in the process. After all, the midfield is not the only area that we must improve this summer which calls for the need to conclude this matter at the earliest.

Ajax’s Antony, Chrisitan Eriksen and Daniel Bachmann of Watford are some of the targets who are being contemplated to strengthen several areas in our ranks. Even if we are determined to sign de Jong this summer, it would be wise to prepare for the worst to deal with all possible scenarios.
