Fabrizio Romano: Erik ten Hag to speak with Manchester United squad over captaincy decision

According to Fabrizio Romano, writing in his Caught Offside columnErik ten Hag is set to speak with the Manchester United squad regarding his decision over the captaincy role. A decision over the next captain is only bound to be made after the club takes care of its transfer business this summer.

Harry Maguire is currently holding the captain’s armband, but his position has been questioned quite a lot in the previous season. Maguire’s disappointing form certainly didn’t help as a leader is said to instil confidence among his teammates, and the centre-back could not do that last campaign.

Romano has revealed that ten Hag will decide on the matter in the next few days or the coming weeks. The boss will speak individually with each player before taking a stance on the subject after careful consideration. The captaincy role is deemed an important part of the manager’s project, so a decision will be taken with utmost care.

Who will be Man Utd’s next captain?

It would be in the best interest of all the parties if Maguire would no longer be the skipper moving forward. He has not been at Old Trafford long enough to warrant the armband over someone like David de Gea, for example.

Furthermore, taking away the captaincy would ensure that Maguire would not be in the spotlight every single time, and the reduced pressure could perhaps help him regain his lost form. Reducing the task at hand would also assist him in focusing on making improvements in his displays.

De Gea could be a good shout as he has been with us for quite some time to understand the current Red Devils squad. Then again, ten Hag’s decision would probably be subjected to internal discussions after carrying out evaluations, so it remains to be seen how this situation pans out in the future.

Maguire is stated to be relaxed about this matter, although it would be best if ten Hag makes him understand his decision if someone else becomes the captain. After all, the coach has to make sure that the central defender would not lose his morale and take this as a lack of trust in his abilities.

Ten Hag must make Maguire understand how this potential change could help him find his feet once again moving forward. Then again, we have no clue about the decision just yet, so it remains to be seen how this situation will develop in the days or weeks to come.
