Transfer News: Ajax willing to sell Manchester United target Edson Alvarez
According to journalist Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf on Twitter (h/t The Mirror), Ajax are willing to sell Edson Alvarez, who is a potential target for Manchester United, in this summer transfer window. He has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, which could come to fruition following this latest update.
Erik ten Hag is looking to improve his options in the midfield ahead of the next season. He has identified Alvarez as a potential target to boost his ranks, which have declined with the outgoings that took place this summer. Now, Man United have received a boost in their pursuit to sign him in the coming weeks.
The Eredivisie club have deemed Alvarez as a “negotiable” player, which means that they are open to parting ways with him this summer. The Red Devils have been provided with an opportunity to make their proposal now that Ajax are ready to engage in talks with interested parties for his signature.
Who is Edson Alvarez?
The Mexican international is primarily a centre-back in trade, but he was converted into a defensive midfielder by ten Hag in the last campaign. Alvarez has taken to that new role really well with his ability to shuttle just ahead of the centre-backs while providing cover for Ryan Gravenberch and Steven Berghuis in midfield.
Alvarez was a regular for the Dutch side in the previous season, having made 40 appearances scoring five goals alongside one assist across all competitions. He also helped them to 24 clean sheets in the process, which is quite an impressive output indeed.
One could say that the 24-year-old could prove to be a perfect addition for us, looking at our other midfield targets for this summer. Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and Christian Eriksen are the two priority cases for ten Hag to boost his squad’s quality ahead of the upcoming campaign.
De Jong’s ability to progress the ball from deep, coupled with Eriksen’s knack for breaking down opposition defences, gives us control and creativity in the centre of the pitch. However, we must also have someone who can provide balance to the team with a defensive solidity which is where Alvarez could come in.

Alvarez is a defensive powerhouse in the midfield, which is helped by the fact that he is a natural central defender by trade. In fact, signing him could even help us address the issue of lack of adequate cover in the backline if necessary.
