Transfer News: Marco Asensio wants Real Madrid stay amidst Manchester United links
According to Spanish outlet Marca (h/t Manchester Evening News), Spanish winger Marco Asensio wants to stay on at Real Madrid for the next season despite interest from Manchester United.
The Los Blancos forward joined Real Madrid from Espanyol in 2016 and has since then gone on to have a pretty solid time in the Spanish capital. Extremely influential in the team in the first few seasons, but an injury that he suffered kind of derailed the Spaniard’s progress.
This season, the 26-year-old slowly yet surely seems to be getting back to his best and has had a decent season with the Champions League winners. Asensio has played 42 games in which he has scored 12 goals and provided two assists across all competitions.
With a contract that expired in 2023, and with Asensio yet to pen down a new deal with the Spanish club, Manchester United have been linked with a move for the talented forward but it seems like the player wants to stay at Madrid.
An opportunity missed?
Anyone who has seen Marco Asensio play knows that the Spaniard possesses a lot of quality and he would definitely add a lot of quality to the Man United squad.
Capable of playing on either wing, as an attacking midfielder or even as a false nine, the Spaniard would have offered Erik ten Hag the kind of versatility he loves to have in his team and would have been the ideal fit.
The Red Devils would have been hoping to get the Spanish winger on a deal this summer considering that his contract is expiring in the summer. Hence, this would have been a signing that made a lot of sense from a sporting and financial perspective.
Yet, it seems as if the Spaniard is going to be yet another opportunity the Red Devils are missing with the player set to remain in Spain. Even as we look to rebuild ahead of next season, we have been unable to complete the signings we wish to do.
At this stage, if every player we pursue does not want to come here, we could find ourselves in a bit of a pickle. Marco Asensio is not the only quality winger in the world and we could look for other options in a similar profile but the Spaniard would have been ideal.

Regardless, Man United march on. We still have a lot of time to sign players and we need to be wise about our decisions as we go about building a competitive team for next season. Even if we don’t get in a player in that position, maybe this is the season where we see more of Anthony Elanga and Alejandro Garnacho.
