Transfer News: Manchester United have been put off by the wage demand of Matthijs De Ligt
According to transfer news from Calcio Mercato, Manchester United have backed off from the pursuit of Juventus defender Matthijs De Ligt after failing to match his wage demands.
Matthijs De Ligt has revealed his dissatisfaction with Juventus’ recent form, with the problem prompting the Dutch international to ponder resigning with the Bianconeri. Manchester United have been mentioned as a possible destination if he moves this season, given his contract expires next summer.
Juventus has already gone two seasons without winning the Scudetto, a situation that could be irritating for the aspiring defence. De Ligt arrived in Turin anticipating significant team success after making a large money transition from Ajax on the heels of an outstanding 2018/19 UEFA Champions League run, but that has yet to happen.
The problem is that Juventus is asking some of its highest-paid players to take pay cuts in order to comply with their new wage limit plan, but De Ligt is hesitant to do so.
Many of Europe’s biggest teams, including United, were put on high alert as a result of this. According to Calciomercato.it, United have previously inquired, but ‘could not guarantee’ him the demanded salary, which is thought to be €12 million per year (just under £200,000 per week).
Juventus have yet to receive a formal offer, and according to the current situation, the Dutchman should stay in Turin for at least another season.
Last season, De Ligt made 42 appearances for Juventus, demonstrating a level of consistency that Manchester United boss Eric Ten Hag may admire. The Dutch manager worked with the impressive defender during his Ajax time and might be interested in a reunion as it would help both parties to rejuvenate their winning plan.
Over the previous year, the performances of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, as well as Raphael Varane’s injury history, have been a reason for concern. Furthermore, according to recent sources, both Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe are expected to depart the club, while Phil Jones’ future remains unknown.

De Ligt might be the answer to Manchester United’s defensive woes. The remarkable exploits of the Dutch defender for Ajax prove that he has the potential to become a great defender. He has the potential to become a regular backup for Raphael Varane with little development.
However, that scenario seems to be a distant dream now as United have been put off by the huge salary demand of the Dutchman. Considering there are other interested parties including Liverpool, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain, signing him wouldn’t be easy.
