Barcelona look to pip Manchester United to Wolves star Ruben Neves using Nico Gonzalez on a swap deal
According to the Spanish newspaper Sport [Print Edition] via Sport Witness (h/t BirminghamLive), Barcelona are plotting to beat Manchester United to get their hands on Wolves star Ruben Neves using Nico Gonzalez on a potential swap deal. The former two are battling it out with each other to finalise a move for Neves this summer.
Neves has been a long term target for Man United as they continue to pursue him ahead of the next season. However, it looks like Barca are ahead of them in the race despite their inability to meet his £42.7million valuation in cash due to their dire finances. However, they are looking to facilitate an exchange deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers using some of their players.
Bruno Lage’s side are particularly keen on signing Gonzalez, and they have “intensified interest” in a potential swap move. They are willing to take him away on loan or even a permanent transfer to drive down the asking price. The deal is made easier since Jorge Mendes represents both players as of now.
Damning blow for Man Utd?
This latest update could be an issue for the Red Devils if both clubs reach an agreement over a potential move. We are desperate for holding midfield additions now that Nemanja Matic will be leaving Old Trafford in this summer transfer window.
That means we are left with no defensive midfield options in our team, which is quite concerning, to say the least. After all, that should not have happened in the first place, as the hierarchy should have done better with their business and managed this situation by having enough choices in the squad.
Neves, who has gained valuable Premier League experience over the years, would have been a quality addition as we look to rebuild our squad under Erik ten Hag. However, if the Catalans and the Wanderers find common ground in this move, we could be in for a difficult summer up ahead.
Exchange deals are usually not easy to be facilitated as the complexities involved in a move make them quite difficult to be finalised. In such a case, the fans would hope that there would be some kind of differences regarding this potential swap that could take place in the future.

Perhaps we should accept the price tag and pay the amount in cash to give us an edge over Xavi Hernandez’s side in this race. Furthermore, a move to Carrington would also offer Neves the opportunity to remain in the PL and ensure stability in his playing career.
The Portuguese international can be deemed a necessity for us as there is no perfect time to sign him up now that he has a free run for the starting role. That being said, we have to wait and see whether the 25-year-old would pick us over a move to Camp Nou or not in the coming weeks.
