Manchester United are ‘extremely close’ to luring away Darwin Nunez from Benfica
According to GiveMeSport journalist Dean Jones (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are extremely close to reaching an agreement for the signature of Benfica star Darwin Nunez.
Nunez has been a standout performer in Portugal. His 34 goals and 4 assists in 41 matches across all competitions have put him in the basket of top young forwards in the world. The 22-year-old even scored an amazing goal against Ajax in the round of 16, which would have caught the eye of Erik ten Hag- who is now going to be United’s manager.
Manchester United were believed to be closely tracking the growth of the 22-year-old Benfica star along with Atletico Madrid. It is believed that the Red Devils are close to signing the Uruguayan striker.
It is also claimed that Man United may have to pay around £50.6m for the transfer. As Benfica has already shortlisted a quality replacement of their own, they would naturally be eyeing an amount that they believe matches Nunez’s potential and value to the Eagles.
How can Nunez help Manchester United?
Manchester United have been highly dependent on 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo for goals. Even though the Portuguese striker has lived up to the expectations, he might not be able to hold his consistency any longer.
With Edinson Cavani set to leave the club, the Red Devils might have to bring in reinforcements to keep the balance of the squad intact. Nunez seems to be a useful addition considering given his age and ceiling.
He comes from the same league where Ronaldo was discovered by United, and plays for the same national team as Cavani.
Nunez is young and is only just entering his peak years. Mason Greenwood’s suspension and Marcus Rashford’s poor form give us two more reasons to after the South American starlet.

Considering the quality of the striker, he might not get unnoticed for long. And that is why our board would be wise to seal this deal as soon as possible if they really want the striker.
The last senior player United directly signed from Benfica was Victor Lindelof for the 2017/18 season. The Swede has turned out to be a decent buy but if Nunez comes on board, fans would expect him to become the club’s leading man up front given his hype and the money Man United may have to invest.
