Transfer News: Benfica Manager gives ‘green light’ to sign Manchester United star Nemanja Matic
According to transfer news from Correio da Manhã (h/t Sport Witness) Benfica Manager Nélson Veríssimo has given his approval for the signature of Manchester United star Nemanja Matic after the Serbian revealed that he is set to end his partnership with the Red Devils.
Since joining Manchester United from Chelsea in 2017, Nemanja Matic has been a crucial member of the squad. However, his form began to drop from last season and he has been able to get back the trust of the manager this term, which resulted in him staying on the bench for the majority of the campaign.
Recently Nemanja Matic announced that he will leave the club at the end of the season. He might have to find a new home in such a situation and he has some fine choices before him as Benfica, Fulham, Juventus, Napoli and Roma are all interested in securing his signature.
Matic’s former team Benfica were keeping a close tab on the 33-year-old player’s situation. It is now believed that the Eagles have become fully convinced about bringing the Serian back to the club after their current manager gave his approval for the transfer.
Despite the green light, Benfica is still not in the best position to secure the transfer as the newspaper Record (h/t Sport Witness) suggests the salary demands and the signing prizes of the United star might be pretty overwhelming for the Portuguese team.
What next for Matic and Manchester United?
Nemanja Matic has already revealed his intention to end his United career and it is highly important that anything can change his mind at this point. He has attracted good interest from the top team. Now it’s up to him and his agent how they want to deal with the possible move. He might be able to reduce his wage demand in order to secure a move to his old club if he wants.
But the situation is not that simple for Manchester United. The Red Devils are set to lose some of the crucial midfielders of the team. Apart from Matic, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek’s future also remains up in the air. Amid such a situation the United board have to bring crucial reinforcements in order to provide a strong team to the new manager.
