Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United are interested in Derby County striker Malcolm Ebiowei

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United are one of the clubs interested in signing Derby County striker Malcolm Ebiowei ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

Although Derby endured a difficult campaign this time around and suffered relegation from the Championship in the end, Ebiowei has been a shining light for the team. The starlet has impressed whenever he was given a chance to perform by manager and United club legend Wayne Rooney.

The youngster was an integral part of the club’s push to climb up the league table, making 16 appearances and proving to be a real threat to the opposition defence. Although he could not help the Rams survive the drop, his displays have caught the attention of other clubs.

Aside from United, Ebiowei has also managed to turn the heads of Premier League rivals Crystal Palace. He has caught the attention of clubs from abroad as well, with AS Monaco and SBV Vitesse keen to snap him up in the summer.

McClaren influence at United

Romano revealed that the 2003-born striker has a Dutch passport, despite turning out for the England U-16s team in the past. If the player continues his impressive performances in the near future, he may perhaps be forced to choose between his nationalities to turn out for the international side.

The transfer expert also said that the departure of Steve McClaren from Derby could play a big role in the future of the youngster. It remains to be seen if the Red Devils have an advantage in signing him, given that McClaren is heading to Old Trafford to join up with new manager Erik ten Hag.

The Manchester side is ushering in a new era with the arrival of ten Hag, with the ex-Ajax Amsterdam boss expected to make wholesale changes at his new club. The English giants only managed to finish sixth in the Premier League table after putting in underwhelming performances throughout the term.

ten Hag, along with McClaren, will look to restore the club to its former glory and get them back to winning silverware. United have not won trophies in five years, with their last league triumph coming in 2013.

McClaren will have seen in person just how good Ebiowei is from his time at Derby, and could suggest the name to the new Red Devils boss. The young striker could be one for the future, with ten Hag known for building young and dynamic teams while he was employed with Ajax.

Only time will tell just how much influence McClaren’s departure from the Championship side will impact the transfer of Ebiowei, but United fans will hope that the starlet makes the move to Manchester. The player may be raw at the moment, but once incorporated into the club’s famed academy setup, he could turn out to be another Carrington success story.

Manchester United aim to bolster their midfield in the summer and are interested in getting Manu Kone.
