Taking to Twitter, Manchester United fans reacted to the 1-0 loss against Crystal Palace and expressed their disappointment regarding their club’s performance on the final matchday of the 2021/22 campaign.

Palace managed to secure their first Premier League victory over United tonight, playing in front of a raucous Selhurst Park crowd that was behind the home team for the entire 90 minutes. Patrick Viera’s men gave their supporters the perfect send-off before the end of the season.

Aside from the final game of the current campaign, it was also the last game in which Ralf Rangnick would lead the Manchester side. The interim manager was appointed late last year to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and will end his tenure as head coach on a disappointing note.

The game was also attended by Rangnick’s successor, Erik ten Hag, who watched his new side from the stands alongside his expected assistant coaches Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren. ten Hag only recently led Ajax Amsterdam to their third consecutive Eredivisie title.

Lacklustre performance from United

The Eagles came up against a lacklustre Red Devils side, who failed to get going from the opening minutes. Palace always looked more likely to threaten and open the scoring in the first half, and they did exactly that when Wilfred Zaha made the most of a wayward backpass from Bruno Fernandes.

The former United player used his strength to brush off Diogo Dalot, before skipping his way inside the opposition penalty box and beating David de Gea with a low strike. It would be the only goal of the match, with the Manchester side failing to provide any sort of response in the second period.

The result ensured that United now head into the upcoming season by qualifying for the UEFA Europa League, by finishing sixth in the league table. Despite the loss, they managed to secure the final Europa League spot after competitors West Ham United managed to lose 2-1 to Brighton tonight.

Arsenal are the other team to qualify for the continental competition, finishing in fifth place. The Gunners and the Red Devils were both fighting to secure Champions League qualification, but both teams were unsuccessful and bested by Tottenham Hotspur.
