Speaking in an interview with The Athletic (Subscription Required), Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata will speak with manager Erik ten hag about his future with the club.

The 34-year-old does not rule out staying with the club for another season under ten Hag. But the midfielder will first have a conversation with the gaffer to understand his ideas and will then make an informed call.

The Spaniard has hardly got minutes this season and his contract with the club will expire at the end of the season. Despite having played only 11 matches this season, the midfielder seems optimistic about his future and wants to speak with the gaffer before making the decision.

Mata has appeared in 284 matches, having scored 51 goals and made 47 assists during his spell with the Red Devils. He was an asset to the club and was an important player when Man United claimed the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017.

After having spent over eight years with the club, the player’s future will be decided before the next season begins. It could all depend on what ten Hag wants from his veteran Spaniard.

“I will see when we speak how we feel, what his ideas are, after that a decision will be made.”

Incoming manager Erik ten Hag will certainly hold talks with the midfielder over his future to see if he fits in with his plans.

A technically gifted player, Mata has shone in his spells at both Valencia and Chelsea. His spell at Old Trafford has been rather underwhelming and has never quite hit the expected levels. Whether ten Hag will give him a final hurrah or part ways this summer remains to be seen.

The squad is in desperate need to add depth and integrating Mata into the current system may not be the brightest idea. But that is up to the manager to decide whether he fits with the team or he lets the midfielder leave the club this summer.
