Manchester United in transfer tussle with Chelsea to sign Inter Milan star Milan Skriniar
According to the Italian source Gazzetta Dello Sport (h/t Football.London), Manchester United are currently engaged in a transfer tussle with Chelsea to sign Inter Milan star Milan Skriniar this summer. He has enjoyed another strong campaign for his side, having helped them maintain their challenge to retaining the Scudetto title.
Skriniar will see his current contract with Inter expire at the end of the next season. That has seen several Premier League sides get alerted to this situation, with Tottenham Hotspur also joining Man United and the Blues in this transfer race. However, the Italian club are hoping to fend off these interests by extending his deal at Giuseppe Meazza.
The Red Devils are looking to strengthen their leaky defence in an attempt to back the incoming manager Erik ten Hag moving forward. They want to add the Slovakian to their ranks, but the Nerazzurri‘s eagerness to tie down Skriniar on a new contract could be a major obstacle in their pathway.
Skriniar to Man Utd, possible?
The 27-year-old has been quite immense this season, having helped the Serie A giants to second place in the league table. He has been crucial in ensuring that the title race is right down to the wire as they boast the third-best defence in the league this term. He has garnered 17 clean sheets to his name alongside four goals from 47 matches across all competitions during this period.
Prising away a player like Skriniar would undoubtedly be a major coup, especially in our current situation. Our defence has often been susceptible throughout this campaign, and there is an urgent need to fix the issues if there are ambitions to build a project for the future under Ten Hag.
The Blues would pose a major threat to our chances as they are in a far better situation than us right now. Moreover, the defensive restructures that will take place in their squad would give Skriniar regular minutes in a side that is a genuine contender to challenge for every possible trophy in a campaign.
Tottenham cannot be taken for granted either, as Antonio Conte did manage Skriniar during their time together in Milan. With Champions League football also being a likely outcome for Spurs, we are handed further blows in this pursuit.

Finally, Simone Inzaghi’s side themselves could also be a major roadblock as they are willing to go to the extreme to renew Skriniar’s deal. That is because they could decide to run down Stefan de Vrij’s contract, which expires in 2023, to help with their attempt to secure the Slovakian international’s future.
Furthermore, the Milan based club have already laid down the foundations for a contract worth €4.5 million-plus bonuses, which will exceed €5million in the years to come. All in all, it would be a major statement from those at Old Trafford if they can pull off a move with all these obstacles in their way.
