Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea reveals his excitement on Erik ten Hag appointment

Speaking to the club’s official website, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has revealed his excitement about the club’s announcement about appointing Erik ten Hag as the new first team manager.

ten Hag is currently in charge of Ajax Amsterdam, with whom he will finish the current campaign as they look to win a hat-trick of Eredivisie titles and part ways in the best possible manner. He will officially join United at the end of the season.

Reacting to the news, de Gea said he was very excited about the club’s decision, saying that he was looking forward to working with a head coach who at Ajax won titles, nearly reached a Champions League final, and develops players.

“Very excited the club has made the decision so now we all know. We know what he has done for Ajax, he has nearly been in a Champions League final, won titles and he develops players, so I’m very excited.”

Up until now, ten Hag has led Ajax to a couple of league titles and a couple of domestic cup trophies. In 2019, his young Ajax team had a fairytale run in the UCL up until the semi-finals of the competition, where they were knocked out in the last minute by Tottenham Hotspur.

“It’s good to know”

The Dutchman will have quite a task on his hands when he takes over at Old Trafford next season, with the Red Devils currently floundering in sixth place in the Premier League table. Trophies have been bare as well, with the Manchester side last winning a title in 2017.

Despite this, de Gea said that he was looking forward to working under ten Hag as the 52-year-old was already watching games and thinking about what he can do to change the team’s fortunes over the course of his reign.

“It’s good to know he is already watching the games and thinking about what he can do to change for us. I’m looking forward to working under him.”

After having won multiple trophies in Holland and catching the eye of football fans with his side’s incredible run in the 2019 Champions League campaign, ten Hag comes to the Theatre of Dreams with quite a reputation.

Given the current situation of the club, a manager like the Ajax boss is perhaps what we need at the moment to improve our team’s performances and get us competing for trophies once again. It must be remembered however, that this is not something that can be achieved overnight.

Our last trophy was the UEFA Europa League in 2017, and since then, we have managed to only make the final of a competition once, when we reached the summit clash of the 2021 UEFA Europa League. Unfortunately, we lost out on the trophy in a heart-breaking penalty shootout to Villarreal, as de Gea missed the crucial spot-kick.

A new era is expected to be ushered in by ten Hag as we begin the next season, with an air of optimism floating around Old Trafford. Only time will tell if the Dutchman will turn out to be a success at United, but given his reputation, the signs look good.
