Manchester United senior figures think forward Cristiano Ronaldo should leave but club owner Joel Glazer to have say
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo could see his future at Old Trafford come to a halt as senior figures at the club think he should leave, although the ultimate decision lies with owner Joel Glazer.
The Portuguese star was last seen in the side’s 1-0 loss to Everton last night, playing the full ninety minutes as the team fell to yet another defeat to go winless in April thus far, denting their Champions League qualification hopes for next season.
With interim manager Ralf Rangnick expected to make way for a new permanent manager in the summer once his tenure expires at the end of the campaign, the club are on the lookout for suitable managerial candidates to succeed the German.
As things stand, Ajax Amsterdam head coach Erik ten Hag seems to be the favourite to land the job given the brilliant work he has done in Holland while in charge of the Dutch giants. This season as well, he is on course to lead them to a hat-trick of Eredivisie titles by the summer.
Ronaldo’s future resting on Glazer
Ajax play by pressing high and are a team that is full of energy, drilled by ten Hag to be the epitome of a modern side. Given that he could be the next manager of United, he will want to know what plans the English side has for Ronaldo, who had little impact at Goodison Park last night.
Aside from the 37-year-old, other older players in the team may also be unable to play in the potential incoming Dutch boss’ system. Even in Manchester, there are senior figures at Old Trafford who have already concluded that Ronaldo should be encouraged to leave in the summer. However, any final decision on the player will rest with Glazer and the rest of the board.
Having re-signed for United last summer, Ronaldo started the campaign in brilliant fashion as he hit the ground running by scoring a brace on his second debut for the club and proved to be a big influence in the team’s progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The Portugal skipper has, however, waned in his performances since the turn of the new year as he has gone through a goal drought. Given that the Manchester side are overly reliant on his goals, the team’s position in the Premier League table has also suffered, slipping down to seventh spot.

With a Champions League place next term looking out of reach, Ronaldo may see himself enter the new season without playing in a competition that he has won an amazing five times, including once with the Red Devils.
A new manager is expected at the club in the summer who will be tasked with getting the side back to where it was, winning trophies regularly and playing exciting football. Given Ronaldo’s age and his poor form this season, it remains to be seen whether the Old Trafford outfit will hold on to the star. It all depends on club owner Glazer, who will need to take a call on cutting ties with arguably their biggest asset.
