Fabrizio Romano reveals the reason why Erik ten Hag is delaying signing for Manchester United

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Ajax Amsterdam head coach Erik ten Hag wants to ensure that he gets a say in decisions taken by the Manchester United board before signing with the English club as their new manager.

The Red Devils are currently on the hunt for a new permanent boss to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was sacked last year after a string of poor results that saw the team slip down the Premier League table.

Ralf Rangnick was brought in on an interim basis until the end of the season to steady the ship, tasked with guiding the club back up the league table and into a top-four spot to ensure Champions League football is played next term.

If ten Hag is offered the Man United job ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, then he will succeed Rangnick, who is currently struggling to inspire the team to a win as they sit in seventh place in the league table and are winless in the top flight so far this month.

ten Hag wants reassurances!

As things stand, the Ajax boss looks likely to be appointed as the new boss, but Romano said that the 52-year-old was still in discussions with the Red Devils before signing with the English club to get more reassurances about his proposed new role.

The Dutchman is said to want to make sure he has enough ‘power’ to decide on the vision and project that the board have planned together with him, especially to avoid transfer mistakes. It is worth noting that the club did not make any new signings in the January transfer window, but let first-team stars Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek depart on loan until the summer.

ten Hag clearly seems to be a man with a plan, making sure of what the club’s ideas in the near future are and ensuring that they may be aligned with his vision. Given how in the past, United have gone through a host of managers who have failed to succeed, it is refreshing to hear about a concrete approach from our potential new boss.

The Ajax man clearly knows what it takes to lead a side to glory, having led the Dutch giants to back-to-back Eredivisie titles and also a few cup competitions during his tenure as manager. This season as well, he is on course to lead them to a domestic double if all goes well until the summer.

His insistence on avoiding transfer mistakes is particularly impressive, given how our recent incomings have performed this term. Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, and Jadon Sancho were brought in last summer, and yet the team is struggling to put out wins.

Having gone another season without any trophies, ten Hag’s imminent arrival seems to herald an optimistic feeling ahead of the new campaign given his trophy cabinet. The loss to Everton last night has damaged our top-four hopes, so now an uphill task remains to hand over the side with the best possible finish to the incumbent Ajax head coach to work his magic on.
