Romano: Man United keeping in contact with managerial candidate, sharing summer transfer window information

Gary Neville feels the Manchester United hierarchy have let down Erik ten Hag in the transfer window.

Fabrizio Romano says Manchester United are giving Erik ten Hag information ‘every week’ on transfer budget and signings

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano on the Here We Go Podcast (h/t Express), Manchester United are giving their potential new manager Erik ten Hag information every week on topics such as transfer budget and signings.

ten Hag is currently in charge of Ajax Amsterdam, who are currently on course to complete a domestic double if they manage to win the Eredivisie title and beat PSV Eindhoven in the KNVB Cup final over the next couple of weeks.

Romano said that conversations between United and the Dutchman over possibly appointing him as their next permanent manager are very positive, with the club still in contact with people close to the Ajax boss.

“Contacts are ongoing and Manchester United are working to make their final decision. All of the contacts with Erik ten Hag are very positive, since the first interview, they are still in contact with people next to Ten Hag.”

Given the 52-year-old’s impressive record in Holland with Ajax, who may win a hat-trick of league titles by the summer under his tenure, it is easy to see why the Red Devils are keen on having the manager as their next head coach by the time the new season begins.

“He is already thinking about it”

However, Romano said that ten Hag is not the only candidate United are in talks with over the job in the summer as Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino is still in the race to be given the opportunity to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Despite the managerial situation being wide open with Pochettino’s involvement, the Italian journalist said that the Manchester side was keeping the incumbent Ajax head coach informed on topics like potential budget and new signings that they want to secure every week.

“He’s well informed on everything into the club, like potential budget, like the kind of signings they want to do. So Erik ten Hag is keeping information from United every week and he is already thinking about it.”

From Romano’s comments, it seems that the English giants have a preference for ten Hag over Pochettino with the kind of information they were feeding him about what they are expecting next season. After all, they wouldn’t be sharing such sensitive information with just anyone.

The Argentine has more experience managing in the Premier League, having led Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton in the past. ten Hag, in that respect, has taken charge of a senior side only in Holland – although he has been hugely successful with Ajax. He took them to the semi-final of the 2018/19 UCL season, something Man United haven’t managed since 2011.

However, the Holland native seems keen on taking up the job at Old Trafford in the summer after United were informed that he wants a say on transfers if he is to land the role, and also wants to help change the way the club work alongside current interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who is set to move upstairs into a consultancy role.

The Dutchman evidently has a plan in mind if he were to be offered the job ahead of the new campaign, and perhaps this kind of thinking and execution is what can take us to glory next season. Only time will tell who our new manager will be, between ten Hag and Pochettino leading the race to take up the vacancy in Manchester.
