Transfer News: Manchester United paying close attention to Benfica striker Darwin Nunez
According to transfer news on 90Min, Manchester United are closely focussing on Benfica striker Darwin Nunez. The 22-year-old has supposedly told the Portuguese club that he is ready to leave and could be targeting a move to the Premier League.
West Ham United did make a bid for the Uruguayan international in the January transfer window but the deal didn’t go through. Whilst the Hammers still maintain their interest, a host of other clubs are also vying for his services and Nunez could have a variety of options to choose from.
Whilst it is understood that the 22-year-old striker has a mammoth £127million release clause in his current contract, Os Encarnados could be willing to let go of their prized asset for a slashed price in the region of £68million at the end of the season.
Can Nunez make us dream again?
This has put some of the top clubs on high alert and could be an interesting proposition should we be genuinely interested in securing his services. The Uruguayan striker has now bagged 26 goals and notched two assists in 33 matches across all competitions for the Portuguese club.
His exploits haven’t gone unnoticed and the coming transfer window could see the suitors lineup on the doorstep. Nunez has proven time and again that he can put the ball in the back of the net, having played an instrumental part in helping Benfica reach the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League as of writing, which isn’t a meagre feat.
The Red Devils have struggled to open up defences on several occasions this season. Their exit from every major competition coupled with bouts of inconsistency has left us asking for more on several occasions.
The Mancunian club has the vastly experienced duo of Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo up front but with the duo well into their 30s, the Old Trafford outfit could do well to add a young exciting striker in their ranks.
At 22, Nunez perfectly fits this bill and could go on to become the torchbearer of the attacking department at the Theatre of Dream should things fall in place. While that may require a lot of things to go in our favour, one can’t fault us for dreaming about it considering the kind of turmoil Man Utd have faced in the last few years.

While the prospect of purchasing the Uruguayan rising star may seem very rosy at the moment the club should be wary of how we have spent enormous sums on players in the past with little to no effect at all. The new manager and staff should thus be thoroughly consulted before any such move is made for the 22-year-old striker.
