Club legend Wayne Rooney urges forward Marcus Rashford to stay at Manchester United and surpass his goal tally

Speaking at a black-tie event in Manchester (h/t The Sun), club legend Wayne Rooney urged Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford to stay at Old Trafford and break his goal tally in the future.

Rashford has been woeful in recent weeks, looking terribly out of form and short on confidence as news broke out that the player was seriously considering his future at Old Trafford after coming through the ranks at Carrington.

Rooney, who won the Premier League trophy 5 times with United, said that Rashford should be focussing on getting the record of being United’s highest goal scorer – a title that the current Derby County manager holds.

“To get the record and be United’s highest goal scorer is f***ing massive.”

The academy product is a fan favourite at the Theatre of Dreams, with the forward making an instant connection with the home support by scoring a brace on his debut in the Europa League before he followed it up with a double against rivals Arsenal in the Premier League just a few days later.

“He is a Manchester lad”

Speculation has been rife about the England international’s future at his boyhood club, with his poor run of form this season. The fact that he has fallen behind in the pecking order in the first team to strikers Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani has not helped either, despite the duo being in their late 30s.

Rooney said that Rashford was a Manchester lad, and that he hoped that the player clears his mind and starts afresh soon as he tipped the 24-year-old to break his goal tally in the future. Rashford has 93 United goals, which is a long way off from Rooney’s 253 goals.

“What I hope is that Marcus Rashford f***ing gets his head out of his a*** and goes and breaks that record. He is a Manchester lad.”

Rooney’s explicit-laden message to Rashford should be well heeded, given that the former player himself has gone through periods when he has not looked his best at United and was linked with moves away from the club.

The veteran striker may be one person who knows exactly what the Carrington graduate would be going through, having dealt with the pressures of being a young star himself and facing criticism from the media and fans for performances on the field.

The thought of Manchester-born Rashford leaving the Red Devils is hard to fathom, given how he has been part of the club his entire life. Academy stars always have a special place in the hearts of the supporters, and if the forward were to depart in the summer, it would be a crushing blow.

A new manager is expected to take charge of the club next season and lead the side to a new era of trophies and success, and perhaps, he could provide Rashford the fresh slate he seems to desperately need at the moment. We can hope that the Englishman is paying attention to Rooney’s message, and takes it on board to see the best out of him next term.
