Manchester United are closely watching Nikola Milenkovic and Mattias Svanberg
According to Calciomercato (h/t Stretty News), Manchester United scouts were thought to be watching Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic and Bologna midfielder Mattias Svanberg.
The Red Devils seem to be quite busy monitoring players with French striker Moussa Dembele also believed to be on their radar at the moment. This could be a good indication for the fans but it is left to see how much of this is actually converted into something substantial.
The Mancunian club have managed to put in favourable results as and when needed but still have a long way to go if they are to go toe-to-toe with the best. Man Utd could be in the market for a new centre-back as well as a defensive midfielder in lieu of their struggle to maintain consistency.
How can these options play out for Manchester United
Despite spending enormous amounts of money to strengthen the defensive department, the Red Devils have struggled to create a stable partnership at the back. Harry Maguire hasn’t really got going ever since making the move to Old Trafford whereas the likes of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof have struggled to put forth impressive performances regularly.
Milenkovic has been a sturdy presence at the back for La Viola, cementing himself at the heart of their defence. The Serbian defender has played 162 matches across all competition having scored 14 and assisting one goal in that period.
At 24, the Fiorentina ace could still have some of his best footballing years ahead of him. A young dynamic defender may help solve the issues at the back, also adding more depth to help compete across different competitions.
The midfield department is certainly another aspect where the Mancunian club would be looking to strengthen their roster. Fred and Scott McTominay are the preferred options in defensive midfield at the moment with Nemanja Matic being able to fill in wherever required.
Whilst the Brazilian has enjoyed a resurgence under the German manager, injury issues have largely disrupted the momentum of McTominay in the last couple of seasons. With Matic having a lot of experience at the elite level, at 33 the club could do well to look for a suitable long-term replacement.
Svanberg has proven his mettle in the middle of the pitch for The Rossoblù. The young midfielder has already made 114 appearances for the Serie A club across all competitions to date. He provides a stable and sturdy option and could be viewed as a more attainable alternative to Declan Rice who has been linked to Man Utd recently.
The club currently sits fourth in the Premier league table but the lack of consistency has haunted them throughout this campaign. The Red Devils haven’t been shy of splurging the cash on numerous occasions but there seems to be a lack of long-term planning at the moment.
