Transfer News: Manchester United lead race to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez
According to a newsletter from Miguel Delaney of The Independent (h/t The Express), Manchester United have shown an interest in Benfica striker Darwin Nunez ahead of the summer transfer window. He has been sensational this season and is currently the top scorer in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
Man United are in the market to sign a centre-forward that can spearhead the attack in the near future. Ralf Rangnick is keen to bolster the forward line as his team has struggled to finish off a lot of chances that have come their way. That has been one of the causes behind our poor results over the past few weeks.
As such, the Red Devils have expressed a “tentative interest” in securing the signature of Nunez ahead of next season. They are in pole position at the moment but have to deal with West Ham United in their pursuit to sign him. Despite being in the lead right now, it’s not completely wrong to presume that Champions League qualification can play some part in this potential deal.
Man Utd’s summer signing?
The Manchester club has found a solid option in Nunez, who can instantly add more quality to the frontline while simultaneously offering long-term security as well. At 22, he clearly has a long way to go before he can reach the peak of his powers.
The Uruguayan has netted 23 goals while assisting twice from 29 games across all competitions this season. The South American star clearly knows where the goal is and is one of the most potent players on the pitch every time he represents Benfica.
The Hammers had a £50million January bid rejected by the Portuguese side for his services. That could give us an idea about what we need to spend in the future if we hope to get hold of the South American.
With Cristiano Ronaldo showing signs of decline in recent weeks, we need someone who can protect our interests in the long term. That is further highlighted by the situation of Edinson Cavani, who is set to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer this summer.
Renewing his contract also seems like a poor option right now, with the ex-PSG striker’s constant unavailability this season causing a lot of frustration amongst the fans.

Marcus Rashford has failed to recapture the form from last season, whereas Mason Greenwood is currently out suspended. Nunez, in that regard, is a potent option to add up front. He can play anywhere across the frontline and can blossom into a real world-beater under the right guidance.
