Manchester United transfer stance on Dean Henderson future for next summer
Ralf Rangnick has revealed the stance taken by Manchester United regarding the future of Dean Henderson ahead of the summer transfer window. The latter has been leapfrogged by David de Gea for the starting spot and has failed to reclaim it so far.
Henderson has made just three appearances so far this season which showcases his current plight at Old Trafford. He is ready to leave Man United on a permanent transfer in search of more game time, having been sidelined by De Gea’s re-emergence to the top this season. Since the first choice keeper has a contract at the club until 2023, the Englishman’s future has entered an uncertain phase at this moment.
According to Manchester Evening News, Rangnick has expressed that the Red Devils will wait until the end of the season to decide over Henderson’s future. The boss was asked whether the club accepted to sell the second choice keeper next summer or not, which led to the following reply.
“Those are things that needed to be decided in the summer, not now. My and our focus is on the upcoming games and those kind of issues regarding goalkeepers and other players are topics for the summer and in the time after the season has been finished.”
Reasonable choice
It seems that the Manchester club does not want to decide on Henderson’s future at this moment when there is still uncertainty over the managerial situation ahead of the next season. Rangnick is only at the helm on an interim basis and is expected to take over a behind-the-scenes role at the end of this term.
It wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep the squad intact until we know who the next permanent manager is. That would offer the new coach the chance to tweak the team as he desires ahead of the next campaign.
That being said, fans would want the club to keep hold of Henderson, considering how de Gea is not getting any younger. Moreover, every strong team needs two quality goalkeepers, and Hendo and de Gea fighting for the number one spot would be beneficial for the club.
With Hendo’s contract not expiring until the summer of 2025, we won’t be in any rush to sell him considering he does not become a free agent for another three years.

Then again, being just 31, de Gea can still play for quite a while if he can maintain his form. Goalkeepers tend to have a longer shelf life and that would be harsh for Henderson to keep warming the bench when he is clearly good enough to fight for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad.
It remains to be seen what comes of this story as we approach the summer window.
