Manchester United dealt Luis Enrique and Mauricio Pochettino appointment blows

According to Fabrizio Romano on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE Podcast (h/t The Express) and The Independent, Manchester United have received disheartening news regarding their pursuit of Luis Enrique or Mauricio Pochettino as their next permanent manager. There is uncertainty regarding the position at this instant, as Ralf Rangnick is the manager only on an interim basis.

Romano claims that Enrique is currently engaged in preparation for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, which means that he has his mind fully set on enjoying a great campaign with La Roja. That would certainly be a hindrance for the Red Devils if they want to bring the ex-Barcelona man as Rangnick’s replacement this summer.

“Of course, maybe the situation could change in the summer of 2023 but now he is only focused on the World Cup with Spain and I cannot see Luis Enrique deciding on his future during this process. He is preparing everything for the World Cup, which is an important one for Luis Enrique because the Euros were good but not great for Spain.”

As for Pochettino, Florentina Perez has identified him as a top target for Real Madrid following their recent 1-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Perez is angry with the way Carlo Ancelotti set up the team, and his job could be on the line based on the outcome of the second-leg fixture.

More Obstacles….

Romano’s update means that while things may change by the summer of 2023, Enrique may well be too focused on the Spain national team for our liking right now. It remains to be seen how, if at all, it impacts our approach regarding signing Enrique.

The entry of Los Blancos in the fray for Poch also poses a threat as they are currently in a much better place than us when it comes to challenging for trophies. But Man United offer the Argentine the prospect of returning to England, where he spent several years with Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.

We must be decisive and patient with regards to appointing our new permanent manager, but that doesn’t mean leaving it too late.

A lot of names will be tossed around until we actually make the appointment. The board, however, must remain focussed and narrow down their approach to shortlist serious, qualified candidates for the job.

Persisting with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer due to sentiment did us no good and we cannot let a repeat of that happen. It remains to be seen whether there will be more updates regarding our search for a new boss in the coming months ahead of the summer transfer window.
