Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly reveals future plans handing Manchester United a transfer blow
According to Tutto Napoli and Calciomercato (h/t The Sun), Manchester United have received a major blow after Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly revealed his stance regarding his future. The centre-back recently won the African Cup of Nations for his national team and enjoyed a great tournament on a personal level as well.
Man United tried to sign Koulibaly last summer but were unable to do so. They eventually brought in Raphael Varane’s transfer from Real Madrid. However, they were looking to rekindle their pursuit due to his current contract situation at Naples. Koulibaly is in line to enter the final year of his deal and has been touted to move elsewhere this summer.
The 30-year-old put an end to all these talks after being greeted by supporters upon his return to Italy. Koulibaly all but admitted that he is staying put in what is sure to be a blow for Man United.
“This welcome makes me very happy. But take it easy because I am not leaving, I am not leaving. I am back in Naples and I am calm. I thank everyone, I have seen all the videos and the things you did when I was not there. Thank you all.”
Doubts about context?
The Senegalese star’s words can be interpreted differently as well, considering how he was welcomed by a hoard of Napoli supporters. The defender could simply be asking them to take it slow as he would address every single person who was present at the venue. Context is just as important when taking such matters into account.
If Koulibaly will stay put in Naples, the Red Devils must broaden their search for an alternative. At 30, Koulibaly remains a top defender but is unlikely to be a long term solution for our woes. Targeting a younger player who is established yet has room to grow would be ideal.

Whatever the case it might be, we cannot overlook what a dependable new central defender could bring to our squad under the current circumstances. Harry Maguire’s inconsistency was highlighted again in our recent 1-1 draw against Burnley in the Premier League. Increased competition could be just what we need to keep him on his toes.
Others like Phil Jones and Eric Bailly cannot be depended on for too long as they have had their injury issues. Moreover, their quality is questionable when compared to the top defenders in the league. Who the Red Devils go for in the summer , if at all, remains to be seen.
