West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice addresses transfer links to Manchester United

West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice has expressed his feelings regarding the transfer links to Premier League giants, Manchester United. He has been touted to leave the London Stadium in the summer transfer window as several Premier League clubs are vying for his services.

The 23-year-old’s contract with the Hammers will expire only at the end of the 2023-24 season. That has not stopped clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea from targeting him alongside Man United in the summer transfer window. He has addressed those talks regarding his future in the recent interview with Gary Neville.

Speaking to Gary Neville on the Overlap podcast (h/t Independent), The Englishman has brushed off those links by stating that they are just “noise” without much weight about it. He added that these rumours are always normal if a player performs at his best on a consistent basis. Finally, he mentioned that his mind is fully focused on fighting for West Ham.

“You constantly read stuff about myself, (Jarrod) Bowen, (Manuel) Lanzini. If you’re performing well and there are top clubs around there are always going to be people circling. But I never actually read too much into it or believe it until something happens. For me it is just noise and I have got to stay focused on what I have got to do at West Ham, which is perform week in, week out and be the best player because that’s what I want to be.”

Professional answer

Even if the 23-year-old has conveyed that the speculations have no truth to them, this is what most players do when asked about their future prospects. Interestingly enough, the midfielder has revealed his desire to win all kinds of trophies and was adamant that he does not want a career sans silverware.

With all due respect to David Moyes’ side, even if they have done well recently, they are a long way off to guarantee a shot at winning titles. That could indicate that the holding midfielder could leave elsewhere in search of achieving his lifelong dream of being part of trophy-winning sides.

However, we are not any better at this moment in time either, as our struggles have been well documented for quite some time. The Red Devils have not won even one single title since they last won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho. The five long years of trophy drought does not bode well at all if we hope to get the Hammers ace’s services next summer.

The Blues and Man City are in a better place than us, which does not favour us in the slightest as we compete for the England international in the summer. But, we can try to convince him of being a part of a better future where we work toward regaining the lost glory.

For that to happen, the board must solve the issues they have created over the past decade, which eventually led us to this stage. Let’s hope that the midfielder would reject our competitors and join us even if they would give him a better shot at titles in the current state.
