Harry Kane on four man shortlist as Manchester United prioritise signing a striker
According to The Sun, Manchester United have included Harry Kane in the four-man shortlist as they prioritise signing a striker in the upcoming summer transfer window. While we do need an infallible scorer upfront, it remains to be seen if it will come at the cost of a defensive midfielder.
Kane is joined by Borussia Dortmund ace Erling Haaland, Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez and Everton frontman Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Man United have made this decision following the club’s struggles in finding the back of the net in recent games.
Moreover, the Red Devils’ stance was further influenced by the potential striker crisis that could unravel in the summer transfer window. Edinson Cavani will become a free agent at the end of the current season and is seemingly likely to leave when the campaign ends. Anthony Martial, who moved to Sevilla on loan, does not want to return to Old Trafford.
Other options like Marcus Rashford are more impactful on the left-wing rather than as a centre-forward, whereas Cristiano Ronaldo is in the latter stages of his playing career. Add to it the uncertainty surrounding Mason Greenwood and it is understandable why the club is looking at reinforcements up front.
Puzzling from Man Utd
While bringing in a prolific striker is a welcome move, it should be in addition to adding a defensive midfielder. The Red Devils squad has been crying out for reinforcements in the middle of the park and it is high time that we addressed it.
While we have improved defensively to an extent under Ralf Rangnick, the club still struggled to control proceedings in the middle of the park. Nemanja Matic is in the twilight of his career while Fred and Scott McTominay lack the defensive nous against top sides. With Paul Pogba also likely to leave, we could be left shorthanded in midfield.
If Rangnick’s side does not compromise the midfield for an attacking signing as they did last summer, there are no objections to going down this route. Haaland is a generational talent, and signing him would be a major boost for us. However, it seems like he has made his mind on a Real Madrid transfer, which means that we should probably look elsewhere.

Kane is another great choice, but it remains to be seen if Spurs are willing to part ways with him, especially as they are trying to rebuild under Antonio Conte. Martinez has excelled for Argentina and Inter, but he recently signed a new contract last year and might prove difficult to land. That leaves Calvert-Lewin, who is debatably the least impressive of the four players under consideration.
We will have a tough job at hand for sure, considering the circumstances surrounding all four targets. Whether any of them will make it to Old Trafford in the summer remains to be seen.
