Transfer News: Manchester United face Chelsea in race to sign Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are engaged in a race with Chelsea to sign Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse heading into the summer transfer window. He has been a long-standing servant at St Mary’s after coming up through their famous youth academy.

Ward-Prowse has attracted attention from the Blues and the Red Devils as both clubs try to meet their respective needs in the middle of the park. The latter did not complete any transfers in January despite the midfield needing a boost in their ranks. The 27-year-old has also been monitored by other heavyweights, although they have not been specified at this instant.

Despite that, West Ham United star Declan Rice continues to be Man United’s priority target next summer. RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara, Boubacar Kamara from Marseille, Kalvin Phillips of Leeds United and Wolves’ Ruben Neves form the alternative names on the shortlist.

Summer preparations?

Renowned for his excellent set-piece prowess, Ward-Prowse often gets overlooked in other areas where he stands out from the rest. His ability to thread passes through the opposition defence is one such aspect, whereas his ability to read the game well helps the Saints to shut down opposition attacks before it threatens them.

Primarily a central midfielder, the 27-year-old can also play as a number ten or a wide-man on the right side when needed. Moreover, the midfielder can get in on the direct goal involvements, which is always a boost for any side. The Southampton ace has made 23 appearances this season and has scored six goals and five assists across all competitions.

The Saints star has also improved his defensive contribution by a distance over the past few years, so he could be a fine prospect to replace Paul Pogba, who has his contract coming to an end next summer. It remains to be seen if the player or the club would be interested in a move after this season.

More Manchester United News

Thomas Tuchel’s side and the other heavy hitters are an obvious threat in our pursuit for the England international. Unlike the Champions League holders, our midfield is not blessed with quality options, so he could earn more chances with us should he decide to join us.

Most fans are disappointed by the board not signing anyone this month, but they could have done so considering how we do not have a permanent boss at the helm. Maybe next summer we could have one, so it would be best to make signings that pertain to the needs of the potential new manager. It will be interesting to see who we will target from the shortlist once the current campaign ends.
