Fabrizio Romano claims Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot is untouchable
Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano has called Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot a key player for the club and has claimed he is untouchable in the squad. Dalot starred in the recent 1-0 win against West Ham at Old Trafford, playing the full ninety minutes and keeping a clean sheet.
The full-back moved to Old Trafford from Porto in 2018, when then-Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho hailed him as a player with fantastic potential and claimed that he could be the club’s right-back for the next ten years. Although he struggled with injuries under Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Dalot has impressed under interim manager Ralf Rangnick and been a regular name in the German’s team-sheet.
Romano highlighted his turnaround at the club, saying he wanted to work hard and fight for his place. It appears to have paid off as he is now a key player for Manchester United under Rangnick.
The Italian transfer guru also said that Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund were keen on signing Dalot last summer and also had plans to return for him in the ongoing January transfer window. However, despite the links away from the club, the Portuguese defender has worked his way into the first team and has now started the last three Premier League games for the Red Devils.
Dalot took his time finding his feet at Old Trafford, with a spell on the sidelines due to injury and then serving as Aaron Wan-Bissaka‘s understudy at right back. Last season saw the player turn out for Italian giants AC Milan, as Dalot preferred to move abroad on loan and gain some regular first-team minutes.
It certainly seems to have helped the player develop, as the 22-year-old returned this year to England to claim his spot in Man United’s lineup. Rangnick’s arrival has only boosted the defender’s reputation with Romano claiming that the player is virtually undroppable now having cemented his spot in the squad.
A product of Porto’s youth system, Man United signed Dalot in 2018, earmarking him as a talent for the future. Their decision seems to have paid off, given the defender’s recent performances. He is an upgrade over Wan-Bisska going forward and has also been impressive on the defensive front.
Dalot’s recent resurgence has also seen him be called up for the senior Portugal team, joining club teammates Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo as the club’s representatives for the Iberian giants. The right-back’s time at Milan last season seems to be a key event in the player developing into a reliable player.

Wan-Bissaka managed to keep Dalot out of our squad with his excellent defensive performances, but the Portugal international seems to have taken full advantage of Wan-Bissaka being sidelined due to Covid and injuries, nailing down a spot for himself in Rangnick’s side.
The German boss too has appreciated Dalot’s abilities and has rewarded the defender for committing to his role and tasks in the team. While Wan-Bissaka is rated highly as a defender, his attacking abilities are often found wanting. In Dalot however, we seem to have a player who can play the role of a modern full-back, being effective in both defence and attack. Hopefully he will continue to develop into a truly world class player.
