Transfer News: Manchester United are interested in set-piece specialist James Ward-Prowse
According to transfer news from Fichajes (h/t SportsMole), Manchester United set to battle with city rivals Manchester City for the signature of Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.
James Ward-Prowse has been a loyal servant of Southampton for the last ten years. The English star has excelled in his job for the past few seasons and is a deft hand at taking set-pieces. Recently, the 27-year-old showed perfection by scoring a fantastic free-kick during a 3-1 loss against the Wolves, which has taken his tally to six goals and five assists in 22 appearances across all competitions.
Now it is believed that Ward-Prowse has attracted serious interest from Manchester as United are set to compete with bitter rival City for his signature in the summer window.
Having seen the player thrive since 2011, the Saints are not at all interested in selling him. Any offer will have to be over £50m for them to even consider it. As Ward-Prowse’s contract runs until 2026, the Saints would undoubtedly have the upper hand in negotiations.
Without the services of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes has been the only recognized midfielder with the spark of making a difference in attack. Even though Fred and Scott McTominay has shown good performance under Ralf Rangnick, they have lacked creativity in the attacking areas.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani could demand better passes from their midfield contingent, and Ward-Prowse could be a viable option in this sector. The English star has secured 39 goals and 45 assists in 344 appearances for Southhampton and provides both controlling and creative qualities in the middle of the park.

However, the midfield star wouldn’t come cheap even if Man United wins the battle against Pep Guardiola’s team. After spending a hefty transfer amount in the summer, whether we would meet the Saints’ high valuation is a big question. Still 27 years of age, Ward-Prowse could give us something different in the middle of the pitch.
