Clive Allen backs Manchester United star Jesse Lingard to improve Tottenham Hotspur
Spurs legend Clive Allen has asked Antonio Conte to sign Manchester United star Jesse Lingard as Tottenham Hotspur are interested in facilitating a transfer. The Englishman has seen himself fall down the pecking order this season and the arrival of Ralf Rangnick has done little to improve matters.
Lingard enjoyed a great spell on loan at West Ham United last season, helping them to a top-six finish. Since returning to Old Trafford, he had a great pre-season while also performing well in the initial stages of this campaign. However, Lingard was not given many chances after that and has had to live off scraps.
Speaking in an interview with talkSPORT (h/t Football.London), Allen expressed his belief that Lingard would prove to be a valuable addition for Tottenham Hotspur. Harry Kane could certainly do with an infusion of creativity and Allen believes Lingard could aid in just that.
“When he came to West Ham he was outstanding, when he spent some time in east London. He is a talented player and at the moment Spurs are looking for an injection. One, they need some creativity in that midfield area. Harry Kane is looking a little frustrated at the lack of opportunities created for him. Someone of Lingard’s quality would be a fabulous addition.”
What will Man Utd do?
The 29-year-old has entered the final six months of his current contract and could leave as a free agent next summer if an extension is not signed. As things stand, it is difficult to see him extend his deal with us and risk the rest of his playing career sitting on the bench.
That is especially the case with the 2022 Qatar World Cup coming up later this year which could give the England international a few weeks to make his case to Gareth Southgate. Unfortunately, we cannot afford to move him out this month due to injuries, suspension and Covid, which could leave the squad thin.

Since a major portion of the season is still left, the team must have solid strength in depth to achieve their goals. Man United are still active in the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup not to mention harbour top-four hopes in the Premier League. With multiple fronts to compete on, strength and depth is imperative at the business end of the season.
Moreover, there is no reason for us to raise money by strengthening our direct rivals this month since it could adversely impact our targets for the season. The north London club can try all they want, but we should not entertain any requests from them unless we receive an offer that we simply cannot refuse. The board has to make a reasonable decision regarding this subject, even if it means we lose out on a transfer fee this month.
