Transfer News: Real Madrid to block attempts from Manchester United to sign Federico Valverde

According to the Spanish news outlet Don Balon (h/t Manchester Evening News), Real Madrid are ready to reject attempts from Manchester United to sign Federico Valverde on a potential transfer in the future. He has fallen down the pecking order and has struggled to gain regular playing time this season.

Valverde has attracted interest from the big clubs in the Premier League and has been tipped to leave Santiago Bernabeu. Man United have registered their interest, but they will not have it easy given Real’s stance on the matter.

Liverpool are another club who have been keeping tabs on the 23-year-old with the motive of facilitating a move in the future. While Manchester United remain intent on solving their midfield issue, Real’s stance could play spoilsport.

Could Man Utd sign Valverde?

The Red Devils should keep a close eye on the Uruguayan to see how his situation with Los Blancos develops over the coming months. If he keeps struggling to earn game time, we could be handed a better chance of landing him. As such, even if they reject our proposals this month, we could have more chances to get him ahead of next season.

The La Liga star is not alone in his current plight as summer signing Eduardo Camavinga is also struggling for minutes. Carlo Ancelotti’s preference for experienced heads like Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro has led to this situation at the Santiago Bernabeu. A similar pattern is noticeable during Ancelotti’s time at his previous clubs, so if it continues over the next few months, we must be ready to turn the screw in the summer transfer window.

Modric is close to renewing his current contract, which is a proper indication as to where Ancelotti’s preferences lie going forward. He has not slowed down despite being in the latter stages of the playing career, which will do little to ease Valverde’s concerns. So we should not backtrack on our interest just yet and prepare ourselves for when an opportunity arises.

With just Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic in our midfield ranks, the need for dynamic reinforcements in the middle of the park is a pressing concern. Matic is well past his prime too, which further puts into perspective how dire the situation is at Old Trafford. That is without considering how Ralf Rangnick is employing a double pivot in midfield, raising the need for a balance between good depth and quality options.

Donny van de Beek and Bruno Fernandes are attacking midfielders, so they cannot be asked to play regularly in these positions. Paul Pogba will see his current contract expire at the end of this campaign, so we should prepare for the possibility that he might end up leaving next summer. For all these reasons signing Valverde would help us relieve some of the pressure in our attempt to regain what we lost over the years.
