Transfer News: Southampton show interest to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson
According to Football Insider (h/t ESPN), Southampton have shown interest in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who is frustrated with the lack of minutes at Old Trafford. He has failed to displace David De Gea from the number one spot after the latter has had a resurgence of late.
Henderson has expressed his desire to leave Man United due to the lack of adequate game time. The Saints have registered their interest in getting his services, but they could be forced to hold out until the end of this season. However, he still hopes to move out in the January transfer window, with the 2022 Qatar World Cup drawing closer day by day.
The Red Devils would probably not facilitate a transfer this month following the recent update from Ralf Rangnick. The boss revealed that he had a conversation with the 24-year-old over this subject. The German further mentioned that he wants the keeper to stay past this month despite the latter’s desire to leave the club.
Tough choice for Man Utd
There can be no doubts over the quality of the Englishman as he had proven it time and time again when he got the chance. However, de Gea has simply not put a foot wrong and is looking like he is back to his best. So, we cannot blame the German boss if he prefers to star the Spaniard in most of the matches.
However, we would want to keep our second choice keeper happy since it would act against our own interest. He was omitted from the squad in the recent FA Cup fixture against Aston Villa, which was surprising, to say the least, since cup competitions are usually reserved for second-choice goalkeepers.
The 63-year-old coach would need to man-manage better in the future, or we may encounter a situation where unrest could arise within the squad. We can clearly understand the reason for keeping hold of the England international but the boss also has to create a situation where he can earn a fair number of minutes.
After all, match sharpness is a thing, and we would want to keep our second choice ready at all times to safeguard against a worst-case scenario. We may be dealt with a situation where the Spain international could get injured or be suspended, so it would be wise to keep the English star ready to deal with such cases.

Since Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have officially announced their intentions, it would not be too much of a reach to see the Red Devils ace put pressure on the club. Southampton have had a bit of an uncertain scenario with their goalkeepers as well recently, so it is safe to assume Henderson would become a starter there- if he joins them.
Otherwise, there wouldn’t really be a point in jumping ship. It doesn’t seem like de Gea is on his way out right now and it is only fair if Henderson wants to move elsewhere for minutes. We would undoubtedly want him to stay with us, given his quality, but fans would also understand why he wants to secure a move away from Old Trafford.
