Transfer News: Corinthians still interested in Edinson Cavani despite Manchester United stance
According to ESPN, Corinthians remain interested in securing the signature of Edinson Cavani despite Manchester United taking a firm stance about a potential transfer this month. Their club president, Duilio Monteiro Alves spoke on the matter during a news conference where he confirmed his intentions.
Cavani is currently in the final six months of his contract at Old Trafford, and he could sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside England this month. That is if he has eyes on moving elsewhere at the end of this campaign. The Brazilian club is targeting him to assist them in their attempt to land the prestigious Copa Libertadores trophy.
Speaking in the presser, Monteiro Alves confirmed that Man United would not sell the Uruguayan thanks to Ralf Rangnick’s stance on the matter. The Brazilian giants have however refused to admit defeat and will continue to pursue the veteran striker.
“Cavani has six months left on his contract. For me, it’s something very difficult, but I have to try. Today I think it’s practically impossible, Manchester will not release him, they have the coach’s word, the club’s position, but we continue our search. The Corinthians players can be sure that, at the right time, with great responsibility, we will bring a No. 9 of the level of Corinthians.”
Hollow attempt
As the Corinthians chief mentioned, Rangnick wants the 34-year-old to stay and assist the club in their challenge to achieving their season’s objectives. As such, there is no reason for us to entertain any offers for him in the winter transfer window. Moreover, he only prefers to move to another club within Europe, which further acts against Corinthians’ interest.
Unless the South American side comes in with an irrefutable offer, we should brush aside their attempts no matter what. The Red Devils striker still has much to offer at Old Trafford in the latter half of the current campaign. Cavani appears to have put his injury concerns behind him and will now look to play a more prominent role in the matches to come.
Rangnick has a preference for implementing a high pressing tactic into his system, and the Uruguay international would be a perfect blend for him due to his immense work rate. That’s not all, as the 4-2-2-2 system allows the boss to pair him with Cristiano Ronaldo to try and boost Man United’s attacking output.

Since we are engaged on multiple fronts this season, losing the squad depth would not be ideal. This could be further exacerbated thanks to the ongoing Covid surge. Man United have little reason to sell Cavani this month.
