Brighton boss Graham Potter hands massive transfer boost to Manchester United by providing contract update on Yves Bissouma
Speaking in an interview, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News, Brighton boss Graham Potter failed to rule out a summer move for Yves Bissouma amidst recent transfer interest from Manchester United.
The midfielder has been one of the operators in the centre of the pitch in recent seasons. Since he arrived in 2018, Brighton have gone from strength to strength in the Premier League. In fact, the Mali international is a massive reason behind the Seagulls staying in the top half of the league table halfway through the season.
It has been recently claimed that a host of clubs, including Man United, are keen on a move for the African star. The Red Devils are keen on adding a defensive midfielder to the ranks in the summer, and Bissouma only has 18 months left on his deal.
Brighton boss Graham Potter recently weighed in on the topic and addressed the contract situation of the player.
“The contract is something between the player and the club. We are comfortable with where we are at; we know the situation. From my perspective, I will just try to help him (Bissouma) when he comes back from the AFCON and help him get back to his best.
“When he does that, he is a top player. We want to keep all our players but I also understand the way the market is and the way football is. You know that things can happen, but my expectation is that we will have a strong squad come the end of the transfer window.”
Sign him before the others do
The 25-year-old is a potential world-beater and would be a solid signing for most clubs. It is no secret that we need a No 6 to dictate play and provide protection to our backline. Bissouma has excelled in those areas in recent years and could fit seamlessly at Man United.
In fact, his signing becomes a necessity, given the current situation amongst our midfielders. Donny van de Beek has been asked to stay in January but he is still continuing to assess options for a loan deal. Paul Pogba is out of contract in the summer and has not signed an extension yet.
Nemanja Matic is set to turn 34 this year and will enter the final 12 months of his deal at the end of this season. Fred and Scott McTominay are viable options but could be upgraded upon in the coming transfer windows. Bringing in the Brighton star could be the first step of doing so.

However, Liverpool and Arsenal are also interested in signing the player. Us, along with those two English teams, are in the race for a top-four finish. It can’t be denied that UEFA Champions League football is a big bonus for any player joining a club. It is important to swoop him up before our rivals land a potential superstar like the Mali ace.
United are one of the best clubs in the world. With all due respect to Brighton and Hove Albion, Bissouma would have a much better chance of competing for trophies on a consistent basis. It remains to be seen if that plays a part in any potential deal, but the prospect of playing for us is something that is hard to resist for many of the world’s best players.
