Manchester United ace Raphael Varane believes VAR took the right decision in the victory against Aston Villa
Speaking to MUTV after the game, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United star Raphael Varane believes VAR made the right call by chalking off Aston Villa’s equalizer.
It was a far better performance than we have produced in recent weeks, but it was not all easygoing. Man United found an early breakthrough after Scott McTominay headed us into the lead after just 8 minutes. Villa retaliated with all their strength.
Ollie Watkins, in particular, was causing all sorts of problems. The away side then won a free kick near the halfway line. Villa worked the set-piece well and Danny Ings eventually scored a tap-in from two yards out. However, it was chalked off after a long VAR review, as the replay showed that Jacob Ramsey deliberately stopped Edinson Cavani from marking his man.
Raphael Varane, who had a fantastic night out, claimed after the game that the VAR decision was the right call.
“No communication, it was a little bit long. But we knew it was about an offside. After this, we needed to be focused on the game, to fight for the victory. I think it is the right decision.”
Vital decision
The decision was right, especially after Ramsey had no intentions to ever target the ball. The midfielder was only focused on stopping Cavani from doing so and it is a surprise that it took as long as it did to rule that as a foul. But then again, VAR requires that there is no valid doubt for it to give a particular decision.
It was ultimately given in our favour, and at the end of the day, that’s what matters- the correct decision being handed out. But that call then put our defenders on their toes and they cleared the danger from thereon, rather than wasting time dilly-dallying on the ball.
Varane, in particular, was immense in the centre of a three-man defence. He offered enough protection to both Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw and was solid in 1v1 situations. It would come as a big boost for the Frenchman, as he had looked a little nervy since returning from his injury.
But on a day when Maguire was unavailable, the rest of the defensive contingent carried out their duties incredibly well. VAR also rightly ruled in our favour, thereby indicating its importance in the modern game. Man United shall now focus on facing Villa again on Sunday as the Premier League is set to re-start this weekend.

It seems unthinkable that we bench Maguire when he is fit, granted he is our captain and a regular fixture in our starting XI ever since he joined from Leicester City. But we can now rest assured that even if he is out on the sidelines, we have the players to make up for his absence.
