Kieran McKenna and Martyn Pert leave Manchester United to join Ipswich Town

According to the official website of Ipswich Town, Manchester United backroom duo, Kieran McKenna and Martyn Pert have left the club to take over key roles at the Third tier side.

McKenna was a key figure at Old Trafford under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, helping the Norwegian guide the club to consecutive top-three finishes in the Premier League. He kept his job in the p[ost-Solskajer era and has briefly worked with interim-manager Ralf Rangnick.

However, a new challenge has since arisen and McKenna is now the manager at Ipswich. He takes over as the club’s 19th manager at the young age of 35. Clearly, there is time for the North Irishman to leave his mark at the Portman Road Stadium.

McKenna began his tryst with coaching in 2009, immediately upon hanging up his boots as a player. He served as the manager for the club’s Under-18 side before being elevated as the first team assistant manager by then boss Jose Mourinho.

Despite Mourinho and his successor coming and ging, McKenna remained a constant in the backroom staff. It would now appear that the opportunity to test himself out in the front office is reason enough for him to end his tryst with Man United.

McKenna’s career as a layer was brutally cut short at the age of 23 thanks to an injury. Hopefully, he will follow in the footsteps of other such people who have instead gone on to make a name for themselves as a manager.

The 35-year-old is not the only one swapping Manchester for Ipswich. Martyn Pert, another member of the Man United backroom staff will join McKenna as his assistant. Pert has been with the Red Devils since October 2019.
