A disappointing night came to an end at Old Trafford as Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by Wolves in the Premier League.

Ralf Rangnick had ample time to prepare for this fixture, especially after most teams played on the weekend despite playing in mid-week. However, the German persisted with the same line-up, but his side could not produce the same performance, let alone the result.

The game began in a rampant fashion as Man United led the press to win the ball in dangerous areas. However, it was the Midlands club that were taking all the shots on target, although few really troubled David de GeaPhil Jones, who was playing his first game after nearly 2 years, looked confident alongside the speedy Raphael Varane.

The opening half was characterized by half chances and wastefulness in the final third. The Red Devils were being outrun in the midfield by a supreme Ruben Neves. However, Greenwood, who looked the most active on the night, created a few chances but to no avail. The lack of an end ball from Aaron wan-Bissaka really hurt our approach in the first half.

Just not good enough?

The start of the second half was pretty different to the start of the first. Our boys were far more optimistic and energetic in their approach. The away side went back into their shell, and we enjoyed the lion’s share of possession for the opening 20 minutes of the half. Bruno Lage saw this and brought on Adama Traore to inject liveliness into the frontline.

Luke Shaw kept the pacy winger relatively quiet in most 1v1 situations. Cristiano Ronaldo then thought he found the back of the net from a free-kick, but it was ruled offside. Rangnick then brought on Marcus Rashford 15 minutes from time, after putting Bruno Fernandes on the pitch at the hour mark. But both attackers could not penetrate the Wolves backline and Jose Sa, who was proving to be the matchwinner.

Unfortunately, we were our own worst enemies in the end. An 84th minute cross by Traore saw Jones head it back on the edge of the box to a patient Joao Moutinho, who struck the ball with enough venom for the ball to lodge itself into the right corner of De Gea’s net. The away fans rejoiced as Rangnick prepared his final substitution in Anthony Elanga.

Alas, our frontline could conjure very little. A 96th-minute free-kick on the edge of the box provided some hope, but it amounted to nothing as Wolves picked up their first league victory at Old Trafford since 1980. The result has now seen us remain in 7th position as we failed to take advantage of 4th placed Arsenal losing on the weekend. Let us now see how some fans reacted on Twitter to our side slumping to the first defeat under Rangnick.
